Mission Bay has many of the ingredients for a great sailing place. Warm water, scenery, great climate and consistent winds and windsurfing shops close by. Each spot has clean beaches and good slalom sailing. Paradise...if only the wind was stronger.
Summer afternoon has a consistent 8 to 10 knots of wind. These winds make the bay a perfect place for beginning sailors, but once your skills develop there is natural tendency to yearn for more wind. You have three choices. You can wait for those occasional high winds and rip on the bay. Or you can travel to nearby sites and Baja. Some San Diego designers have developed custom epoxy boards of the lightest foams with thick, flat designs that plane and carve jibes in winds under 10 knots. Now the new ultra wide short boards are perfect for Mission Bay. Nice beach and grassy rigging areas at all Mission Bay sites.
The South Bay is a nice spot for some mellow longboard sailing. The winds are in that perfect 10 to 15 knot range and the water can be in the high 80's by late summer.
