Tourmaline Overview
Tourmaline has a small cove with a point break just north of the parking lot. Nice beach surrounded by eroding cliffs. Tourmaline offers good wave sailing when wind blows north or northwest. It can be tricky getting out when the surf is big and the wind is light on the inside. But this spot can get very good when stronger clearing winds 18-25 kts. arrive in the spring.
The winter north swell makes PB Point a beautiful side or side onshore wave. There is a beach break with some rocks in winter. summer afternoon winds are mild in the 10 - 15 kt range. This is a great place to learn how to surf sail when the wind and surf are light. Be sure to watch out for all the surfers.
Water temp. is very comfortable in the late spring, summer and early fall when trunks or a shorty will do the job. The coldest water being in the winter months averaging in the upper 50 s to low 60 s when a full suit is required. In winter there may be strong currents. Water temps: summer/68-72degrees fall/62-67 winter/57-61, spring/60-65. There may be pollution after measurable rain. Watch out for sting rays in the sandy shallows of the cove.
Parking is free but often gets crowded with surfers on weekends even when it s windy. The water is warm and in summer and early fall trunks or shorty suit will suffice.
A beach boardwalk runs from Tourmaline 7 miles south to South Mission where there are bike, surfboard, & rollerblade rentals along with restaurants and even a roller coaster.

Sensor Notes
Located at the middle of the Crystal Lodge Pier. This site has no obstructions except buildings on the boulevard about 150 yards away that play a part in any offshore winds. No corrections are needed and the word is that it is very accurate, except during heat waves when there is a lot of (vertical) sheer causing the sensor to over read, relative to surface winds.
