This area rivals Cape Hatteras for wind. This, combined with the Park's ample parking, makes "The Hook" a popular destination. Kiters park in LOT B, carry their gear across the road, and launch into the cove. The water is protected here, swell and chop are the most one sees. Windsurfers launch across from LOT C.
Ample parking; $10 weekends, $8 weekdays, $60 for season pass, after 5pm free, and no charge after Labor Day to Memorial Day. Something for all skill levels. Vies with Cape Hatteras for second windiest East Coast sailing area.

Maps & Directions
Take exits 117 or 105 off the Garden State Parkway onto Route 36 south. Take 36 north to Highland Beach Road and continue to Gateway National Park. Enter Park and go to Lot C.

Sensor Notes
The sensor is located on the Sea Gull's Nest at parking lot D.
If you launch into the cove at lot C, northwest through north winds match the meter reading. (In north winds, be sure to get beyond the wind shadow of the cove.) Northeasterly through southeasterly readings are accurate on the ocean side, but are rarely sailed due to the nasty shore break. The best place to catch Nor'easters is out of the park's wind shadow at Port Monmouth, just west of the Sea Brook Historic House.
South and southwesterly winds are blocked by Atlantic Highlands and will be about 3MPH lower that those reported. The further north you go, the better the fetch and the closer the match between actual and reported conditions. On SW winds, one option is to go further on Sandy Hook to Horeshoe Cove which is more open to that wind direction.
