Ocracoke Island is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and only 800 acres of the island are private land. Ocracoke is 15 miles long and 1 to 2 miles wide. There is no ocean front developement on Ocracoke. There are less than 1500 year round residents but it is a day trip destination for many of the tourist visiting the northern Outer Banks. Ocracoke Island offers soundside flat water or ocean wave conditions depending on wind direction. Northeast wind is side on in the sound. Southwest winds are side onshore on the Ocracoke ocean side. Soundside sailing is in shallow 1 to 4 feet of water.
