Lincoln City Overview
Road's End Wayside, located just north of Lincoln City, is one of the more frequently visited wavesailing locations on the North Coast. This spot usually receives slightly stronger NW winds than it's neighbor Oceanside to the north. Conditions here are augmented by Hecata Headlands jutting out into the Pacific causing winds to accelerate as they pass through the gap. Wave conditions at Road's End tend to be on the beach-breakish side with good size closeouts on swells over 8 feet. Better waves can be found in the early spring as winter formed sandbars lie just offshore. A strong southerly rip also is in effect right off the beach which can complicate sub-planing days. But when winds here are in the 18-24 mph range with a 5-6 ft swell, sailing at Road's End is quite manageable. Parking here is usually not a problem as a medium sized lot exists at the wayside with a smaller circular lot located just to the north. Large grassy area for rigging, plenty of beach space, restrooms and a nearby restaurant all combine for an enjoyable family destination as well.

Heading from Portland, drive south on I-5. As you begin approaching Salem, pay attention for signs indicating Coast Beaches than take exit #258. Leaving I-5 and heading onto HWY 99 (Portland Rd E ) go south towards Capitol St. and into downtown Salem. Follow the signs pointing towards HWY 22 / Coast Beaches which will lead you over the Willamette River and then out of the city center. Stay on HWY 22 for approximately 25 miles until it intersects with HWY 18, turn left on HWY 18 and continue westward to the coast. Following HWY 18 to the HWY 101 junction is about 25 miles as well, once you reach HWY 101, turn south towards Lincoln City. As HWY 101 approaches the north end of town, take a right turn at the 1st stoplight (Logan Road) you encounter. Drive down Logan Rd for about 1/4 mile, look for the small pullout area called Road's End on the left hand side. Two parking areas are available and generally busy but accessible on the weekends.

Sensor Notes
This sensor is positioned at the Dory Cove Restaurant right next to Road's End Wayside Park. Located on the northwest corner of the building, the sensor mast here was reduced in height from 15ft down to 10ft during repairs performed Nov '06 for several reasons, one of which included the desire to reduce reported windspeeds ever so slightly. As this site is located on top of a 50-75ft bluff that stretches both north / south, it encounters a little forcing of sea surface winds that cause the sensor to over report actual beach / break zone conditions. Windsurfers often bear the load here as they desperately pump to get past the fast-jacking, relentless waves that dump on this steep banked beach. Much to the delight of the many Chinook Casino drawn onlookers of course.
