Gilgo Overview
Owned by the Town of Babylon, Gilgo has been a surfing scene for decades. The Gilgo Beach Inn serves up burgers, beer and drinks to a mixed scene of beachgoers, bikers and boaters making for a far more colorful scene than the nearby state parks or other town beaches. Enjoy this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=075vVUhSYKw&feature=related Ocean kiting can be excellent. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEGQ9xfE9fc&feature=related Summer winds tend to be thermally enhanced SW (side-on). Kiters congregate and launch on the eastern side of the beach downwind of the crowds. Surfers rule the beach at Gilgo. The lineup should be avoided by kiters despite the temptation to work the break. The beach is infinitely long, so just go farther east to avoid them. For more advanced Windsurfers. Heavy leeward rip and a bit of shore dump at high tide. Surf etiquette apply to windsurfers as much as they do to kiters.
