West Island Overview

West Island is one of the best fall windsurfing sites in New England. Best to go past labor day. You will find a beautiful, empty beach. Launch to the east, the only place without rocks. Park by the lookout tower. You'll have 100 yards to walk your equipment to the beach. It is best on a Southwest, but also good on easterlies. Just watch out for a couple rocks off the point if the wind is directly onshore.
What makes West Island good is that it is the most exposed launch into Buzzards bay. On a southwest, the east launch is flat on the inside and big on the outside. Expect swells at least head high on 4.0 days.
There is a sand bar off the point that changes from year to year. On good years it creates excellent ramps, though the wave isn't quite turned enough for riding.
*** Warning ***
Be very careful sailing this site on a northwesterly, westerly or northeasterly with an outgoing tide. The current just off the island can be strong and if you miss the tip of the island, you will be in trouble. Advanced sailors with a buddy only in these conditions.

Exit 18 on 195 (Fairhaven). Head east on 240. Go straight across route 6 onto Sconticut Neck Road. Turn left when you see the sign for West Island. After crossing the causeway, take first right. Go to the end to the end (it curves to left) and park next to the WWII lookout tower. Launch to the east.

Sensor Notes

This is a very accurate meter in all wind directions. In fact, it may be the only meter in the network that can always be relied upon. Keep the meter reading in mind when launching to the east on a SW wind. It will appear light near shore, but once you're out in the bay the wind will be what the meter says it is. Rig accordingly.
